French side AS Monaco has made an addition to their squad by signing talented Ghanaian defender, Mohammed Salisu. The transfer deal was finalized on Tuesday, as confirmed by both AS Monaco and English second-tier side, Southampton. According to local media reports, the transfer fee for the 24-year-old player amounted to around 15 million euros ($16.53 million).
Mohammed Salisu’s journey in English football began in August 2020 when he joined Southampton from Real Valladolid. During his time with Southampton, he showcased his abilities in nearly 70 Premier League matches until the unfortunate relegation of the club in the previous season.
His outstanding performances did not go unnoticed, and as a result, he earned his debut for the Ghana national team in September 2022 during a friendly match against Brazil, which ended in a 3–0 defeat for Ghana.
Salisu’s exceptional skills and consistent performances led him to be selected by manager Otto Addo to represent Ghana in the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar. Throughout the tournament, he demonstrated his defensive prowess by starting in all three group games. Moreover, he even managed to score a goal during Ghana’s sole victory against South Korea.
AS Monaco had a decent campaign in Ligue 1 last season, finishing in sixth place. Unfortunately, this placement meant they missed out on securing a spot in the European competitions.
With the acquisition of Mohammed Salisu, AS Monaco aims to strengthen their defensive lineup and enhance their chances of achieving higher standings in the upcoming season. The five-year contract signed by Salisu indicates the club’s confidence in his abilities and potential contributions to their future success. Fans and football enthusiasts eagerly anticipate witnessing Salisu’s impact on the team’s performance in the forthcoming matches.
