Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez has officially signed with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli, departing from Manchester City. The deal, which was announced on Friday, is set to run until 2027, according to statements from both clubs.
Although the exact financial terms were not disclosed, British media outlets have reported that Manchester City, the Premier League champions, have accepted a lucrative offer from Al-Ahli. The deal is believed to be worth a base fee of 35 million euros ($38.53 million) with an additional five million euros in potential add-ons.
Expressing his sentiments about the move, Mahrez shared a statement: “To play for Manchester City has been an honor and privilege. I came to City to win trophies and enjoy my football, and I achieved all that and so much more. I have had five unforgettable years with this football club, working with unbelievable players, fantastic supporters, and the best manager in the world… Manchester City will forever be a huge and happy part of my life.”
Throughout his time with Manchester City, Mahrez showcased his exceptional talent, scoring an impressive 78 goals and providing 59 assists across 236 appearances in various competitions. His contribution played a pivotal role in the club’s success, earning 11 trophies, including five league titles, since his arrival from Leicester City in 2018.
However, in the last season, the 32-year-old saw his role slightly diminished under Pep Guardiola’s management, managing to score 15 goals in 47 games but missing out on key matches like the FA Cup and Champions League finals, where Manchester City clinched their historic treble.
It is worth noting that Mahrez had recently extended his contract with Manchester City until 2025, but the opportunity to join Al-Ahli was too enticing to pass up.
In his new venture with Al-Ahli, Mahrez will be teaming up with Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who made the move to the Saudi club from Chelsea last month. This move reflects the growing allure of the Saudi Pro League for European-based players, a trend that gained momentum when Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Al Nassr in January.
Overall, this transfer marks an exciting chapter in Riyad Mahrez’s football journey, and fans will undoubtedly be eager to see him excel in his new team’s colors. With his exceptional skills and experience, Mahrez is set to make a significant impact on Al-Ahli’s future success in the Saudi Pro League.
