Bayern Munich’s Senegal forward, Sadio Mane, has completed a move to Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr after a single season with the Bundesliga champions. The transfer was announced by both clubs on Tuesday.
According to Al-Nassr’s official announcement on the messaging platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Mane has signed a four-year contract with the club. While the financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, media reports suggest that Al-Nassr paid 40 million euros ($43.85 million) for the 31-year-old forward. This move came with two more years remaining on Mane’s contract with Bayern.
Sadio Mane arrived at Bayern last year with great expectations, having previously scored an impressive 120 goals in 269 games for Liverpool, where he achieved success in various prestigious competitions, including the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, and Club World Cup.
During his time at Bayern, Mane’s performance did not meet the same level of success as his tenure at Liverpool. He encountered difficulties within the team, particularly with his teammate Leroy Sane, which led to an incident where he physically confronted the German winger. Consequently, Mane faced a fine and suspension as a result of this incident.
The two-time African Footballer of the Year showcased outstanding form with Liverpool, averaging more than 20 goals per season in his last five campaigns. However, his goal-scoring tally diminished to only 12 goals during his time at Bayern.
Bayern’s CEO, Jan-Christian Dreesen, expressed gratitude to Sadio Mane for his contributions during the past season. He acknowledged the challenges faced by Mane, including an injury just before the World Cup, which prevented him from representing Senegal in the tournament. Dreesen also highlighted Mane’s leadership in guiding Senegal to their maiden Africa Cup of Nations triumph and World Cup qualification. Unfortunately, due to extended periods of downtime from injuries, Mane was unable to fulfill his potential at FC Bayern, prompting both parties to decide on starting a new chapter in his career with a fresh start at another club.
Sadio Mane now joins an Al-Nassr team that has been actively bolstering its squad. The club made significant signings, including Cristiano Ronaldo last season. Additional acquisitions include midfielders Marcelo Brozovic from Inter Milan and Seko Fofana from Lens, as well as left-back Alex Telles from Manchester United.
It is worth noting that Al-Nassr faced recent restrictions on registering new players due to outstanding debts. FIFA demanded the payment of 460,000 euros ($504,712.00) related to the transfer of Nigerian player Ahmed Musa from Leicester City. Despite these challenges, Al-Nassr remains determined to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season.
