Arsenal’s prolific Brazil striker, Gabriel Jesus, will be unavailable for several weeks after undergoing a knee procedure connected to his injury during last year’s World Cup. Manager Mikel Arteta shared this news during a press conference on Wednesday.
Gabriel Jesus had already missed a significant portion of the previous season due to a knee surgery in December, which stemmed from an injury he sustained while playing for his national team at the Qatar World Cup.
Speaking after Arsenal’s victorious 6-5 penalty win against AS Monaco following a 1-1 draw in the Emirates Cup, Arteta confirmed that the current issue is linked to his previous injury and subsequent surgery. The coach stated, “This morning, he underwent a minor procedure to address some discomfort in his knee, which has been causing issues.”
Arteta further emphasized that the setback is not a major concern but expects the striker to be sidelined for a few weeks. Jesus, aged 26, had already taken almost four months earlier this year to regain full fitness after his previous injury, during which Arsenal spent weeks in the top spot, aspiring to clinch their first Premier League title since 2004, eventually finishing as runners-up.
Lamenting the timing of the setback, Arteta highlighted Jesus’ recent impressive form, particularly praising his performance against Barcelona in a friendly match just last Thursday. The manager expressed his disappointment, stating, “It’s a significant blow as he had returned to his best, and his condition was excellent. Unfortunately, we’ve lost him for the time being.”
Arteta clarified that Gabriel Jesus had been experiencing discomfort for the past few weeks, leading to the decision to undergo the procedure to ensure the player’s long-term well-being. Arsenal’s main priority is to protect the player and facilitate his swift return to the pitch.
The upcoming 2023-24 campaign will see Arsenal commence their season at home against Nottingham Forest on August 12th. Though Jesus’s absence will be felt, Arteta and the team remain determined to kickstart the new season with strong performances and competitive spirit.
