Ex-Barcelona and Brazil footballer, Dani Alves, has been formally indicted for alleged sexual assault that took place in a Barcelona nightclub last December. His legal representative, Cristobal Martell, revealed that Alves would not delay the legal proceedings by appealing against the indictment.

The presiding judge has cited evidence of misconduct by the 40-year-old player, although Alves maintains that the encounter was consensual. The arrest of Dani Alves occurred on January 20, and he has since been held in a prison outside Barcelona, denied bail. Should he be found guilty, Alves could be sentenced to imprisonment ranging from four to fifteen years.

Addressing reporters shortly after Alves’ appearance before the Barcelona court, lawyer Cristobal Martell asserted, “Dani Alves is deeply troubled by the narrative of events and strongly disagrees with it.” Martell further confirmed that his client is determined not to lodge an appeal to expedite the legal process.

The next step in the case requires the prosecution to present formal charges to the court, while the defense will provide its written counterarguments. Subsequently, a trial date will be scheduled to commence proceedings.
