French Ligue 1 club, Olympique de Marseille, has officially announced the appointment of Italian football figure Gennaro Gattuso as their new head coach. This significant decision comes in the wake of the departure of Marcelino, the previous coach, and it was made public on a Wednesday.
Gennaro Gattuso, a 45-year-old football tactician with a rich history, will assume the coaching responsibilities at the club. Marcelino, a Spaniard, left the club under strained circumstances involving disagreements with the passionate Marseille supporters.
Gattuso’s coaching journey recently included a stint at Valencia, where he took charge in January. However, his tenure with the LaLiga side was short-lived, spanning just seven months, and he left the club with Valencia teetering above the relegation zone.
Prior to his Valencia tenure, Gattuso held prominent coaching roles at two prestigious Italian clubs: AC Milan and Napoli. His managerial career saw him part ways with Napoli at the conclusion of the 2020-21 season, a season that saw Napoli clinch the Serie A championship.
As of now, Marseille finds itself in the eighth position in the Ligue 1 standings. Their current season performance consists of two victories, three draws, and a challenging 4-0 defeat to Paris St Germain. Notably, the club fell short in their quest to secure a spot in the prestigious UEFA Champions League for this season.
Looking ahead, Olympique de Marseille faces AS Monaco in their upcoming fixture scheduled for Saturday. Subsequently, they will play host to Brighton & Hove Albion in the highly competitive Europa League. Stay tuned for more updates on Marseille’s football journey under the guidance of Coach Gennaro Gattuso.
