Benjamin Mendy, the former Manchester City player, is taking legal action against his ex-club over unapproved wage deductions, amounting to millions of pounds. The France full-back, aged 29, concluded his tenure with City when his contract expired this past summer.
Following Mendy’s departure, he faced allegations of rape and attempted rape, which were later dismissed. However, reports suggest that City ceased Mendy’s payments in September 2021 when he was initially charged and detained.
In response to this matter, UK sports lawyer Nick De Marco is representing Mendy in this “multi-million pound claim.” The legal proceedings are expected to take place in 2024, indicating a prolonged dispute.
After leaving City, Mendy joined Ligue 1 outfit Lorient for the current season, participating in three substitute appearances for the French team. His transfer to City from Monaco in 2017, worth £52 million, witnessed his involvement in winning Premier League titles in 2018, 2019, and 2021.
Mendy’s final game for City was in the Premier League on August 15, 2021. Subsequently, he faced a period of five months in custody before being granted bail in January 2022. His trial commenced in August 2022, resulting in his acquittal on multiple charges, including six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
In January, Mendy was cleared of additional allegations involving the rape and attempted rape of women in July, following a retrial.
