Trabzonspor fans say the sacking of Mikel Obi in March led to the team’s championship loss to Istanbul Başakşehir. The team were top of the table before the Turkish Super Lig and sporting activities were suspended in Turkey due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The president of the Bolivian Football Federation (FBF), Cesar Salinas, died Sunday after being hospitalized with COVID-19 earlier this month, officials said. The federation confirmed his death in a statement that highlighted his “dedication and commitment to national and international football.”

Former Bayern Munich and Croatia manager Niko Kovac has been named the new Monaco boss. Robert Moreno was sacked after only seven months in charge of the Ligue 1 club on Sunday.

Istanbul Basaksehir claimed their maiden Turkish Super Lig title and the first major honour in the club’s history with victory over Kayserispor. Mahmut Tekdemir’s first-half goal proved enough as Basaksehir wrapped up the league with a game to spare.

Lionel Messi won his seventh La Liga golden boot – and his fourth in a row – after scoring twice in Barcelona’s win over Alaves on the final day. The Barca captain finished on 25 goals, four clear of Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

Champions Real Madrid drew their final La Liga game which relegated opponents Leganes to the second division. Celta Vigo’s goalless draw at Espanyol was enough to keep them up by a single point at the expense of Leganes.

Watford have sacked manager Nigel Pearson with two games of the Premier League season remaining and the side three points above the relegation zone. Ex-Leicester boss Pearson is the third manager sacked by the club this season following the exits of Javi Gracia and Quique Sanchez Flores.
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ndubuisi Egbo on Sunday entered the history books as the first Nigerian manager to win silverware with a topflight European club, when he guided FK Tirana to the Albania league title.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea endured a Wembley nightmare as Chelsea strolled to 3-1 victory and set up an FA Cup final date with Arsenal. United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ditched his usual FA Cup keeper Sergio Romero to keep faith with De Gea – but the experienced Spain international produced two horrendous errors either side of half-time to gift Chelsea two goals.

Ekaterina Alexandrovskaya, who was born in Russia but competed for Australia in figure skating at the Olympics, has died in Moscow at the age of 20. The cause of her death on Friday has not yet been disclosed. Alexandrovskaya retired in February due to injury.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta outmanoeuvred his mentor Pep Guardiola as the Gunners reached the FA Cup final with 2:0 victory at Wembley. Arteta, who left his job as Manchester City assistant manager to succeed Unai Emery at Arsenal in December, now has a chance to mark his first season in charge with major silverware when they face Chelsea or Manchester United in the final on 1 August.

Leeds United have been promoted to the Premier League after 16 years away. Their place in the top flight for next season was confirmed by West Brom’s 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town on Friday. Leeds will now be crowned champions if Brentford do not beat Stoke on Saturday or the Whites then take a point from Sunday’s visit to Derby County.

Zinedine Zidane says sealing a first La Liga title with Real Madrid in three years has made him happier than winning the Champions League. Real wrapped up the title with a game to spare as they edged past Villarreal at an empty Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations will take place in June and July, says the acting Secretary General of Confederation of African Football (CAF), Abdel Bah. The timing of the competition has been the subject of speculation after President Ahmad stated in June that it would take place in 2023 while saying he ‘did not know what month’.
