Fernando Torres continues to forge ahead with his coaching career and next season will provide him with a great opportunity.
The 37-year-old will take charge of Atlético Madrid’s Under-19’s squad, AS understands. The Rojiblanco legend has spent the past few months preparing himself to take the next step up, after working with several of the different youth categories at the club. El Niño, who called time on his playing career in June 2019 while he was with Japanese side Sagan Tosu, joined Atleti’s youth academy in January to further his coaching career. Torres worked alongside Nacho Fernández with the reserves to learn about the various different training methods and gain experience. After leaving the position for a short while due to personal reasons, he returned and began working with the Under-19s who ended the season beating Real Madrid to the league title. Now the moment has arrived when he will take the reins of a squad brimming with talent. For the players coming through, who better than an Atlético Madrid idol and role model to follow to help them with their own education. In September 2020, Torres mentioned that his plan was to return to his hometown club, on the condition that he could help Atlético. He stressed that he would need time to make sure he was properly prepared to accept the responsibility. Torres follows on from the coaches who were instrumental in his own formation and career – Luis Aragonés, Simeone, Del Bosque, Rafa Benítez and Jose Mourinho among others. Who knows, maybe one day in the future he will have the chance to take charge of the first team, but first he must earn his spurs with the Under-19s – a promising young side which is looking to the future with all the excitement and hope in the world.
