Ten-man Mali beat nine-man Mexico 2-0 in their first Group D match of the Fifa Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand, as Senegal lost 3-0 to Portugal in their opening Group C fixture. Mali, who secured the biggest upset of the competition so far through goals from Adama Traore and Dieudonne Gbakle, were forced to defend for much of the first half against Mexico. Mali seemed likely to be further stretched when Hamidou Maiga was shown a red card in the 56th minute for a clumsy tackle on Hirving Lozano. But Mexico went from being a man up to a man down in the space of two minutes. Diego Gama was sent off for an off-the-ball incident in the 66th minute, and Oscar Bernal received a second yellow card for his challenge on Souleymane Diarra in the 68th. Mali quickly capitalized on their numerical advantage. Adama Traore headed home Youssouf Kone’s free-kick 14 minutes from time, and Mali sealed the game three minutes later when Dieudonne Gbakle slammed the ball home. Mali coach Fanyeri Diarra said the early win lifted pressure from his team. “I’m amazed by the great shape my players are in physically,” he said. “They’re up to the task even though they’re coming to the end of the regular season at club level.” Mali are top of Group D after Uruguay beat Serbia 1-0.

Substitute Alessandro Matri was the unlikely hero when he scored an extra-time winner to give Juventus a 2-1 win over Lazio in the Coppa Italia final, keeping them on course for the treble. Matri, who has changed clubs in each of the last four transfer windows and been a fringe player since returning to Juventus in January, blasted the ball into the roof of the net in the seventh minute of extra-time. It was a record tenth Coppa title for Juventus, although their first since 1995. Having already won Serie A for a fourth successive season, Juventus will attempt to cap their season by winning the Champions League in the final against Barcelona on June 6. Lazio took a shock lead after four minutes when Andrea Pirlo failed to cut out a free kick into the area and Stefan Radu rose to head the ball into the top of the net. Juventus needed only seven minutes to reply, central defender Giorgio Chiellini popping up to volley home from close range after Pirlo’s floated free kick was knocked down by Paul Pogba. Matri had a goal ruled out for offside late in the second half but made no mistake when Tevez’s shot rebounded at his feet in extra-time in a move set up by an incisive ball by Pirlo.

Barcelona club won the “Copa del Rey” (Spanish King’s Cup) by defeating Athletic Bilbao 3-1 in the final at the Nou Camp inBarcelona on Saturday night. “Barca” star Lionel Messi made his team take the lead in the 20th minute. Argentine forward found the net after skipping four Athletic Bilbao players, 1-0. Barcelona’s Brazilian flamboyant forward Neymar doubled the score in the 36th minute, 2-0. In the 74th minute, Barcelona star Messi appeared on stage once again. Messi received the ball in the penalty box and found the net, 3-0. Dani Alves produced the assist. Five minutes later Athletic Bilbao scored their consolation goal when Inaki Williams headed the ball into the net, 3-1. Barcelona won the match 3-1. Catalan side Barcelona’s captain Xavi Hernandez, who will be leaving the club at the end of the season, lifted the trophy handed by King Felipe VI of Spain. Barcelona are the most time Copa del Rey winners with 27 titles. Basque club Athletic Bilbao, who won this trophy for 23 times so far, lost the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona for the third time after 2009 and 2012. Spanish La Liga and Copa del Rey champions Barcelona are looking for making the “treble” by snatching the UEFA Champions League title away from Italian team Juventus in the final on June 6 in Berlin.

Wolfsburg won this season’s “DFB-Pokal” (German Cup) by beating Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in the final game at Olympiastadion in Berlin on Saturday. Wolfsburg won the trophy for the first time in their history. Dortmund took the lead in the 5th minute when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang found the net, 1-0. However Wolfsburg equalized in the 22nd minute when Brazilian midfielder Luiz Gustavo scored, 1-1. Wolfsburg came back after their Belgian attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne’s long range effort in the 33rd minute, 2-1. Five minutes later Dutch striker of Wolfsburg, Bas Dost made it three with a header. This goal sealed the triumph for the “Die Wolfe” (The Wolves). Meanwhile, Wolfsburg commemorated their deceased player Junior Malanda. Malanda’s shirt with the number “19” was placed in a green heart on the left side of a jersey particularly prepared for the final. The 20-year-old Belgian defensive midfielder Malanda died in a traffic accident in January. Borussia Dortmund’s manager Jurgen Klopp said goodbye to Dortmund fans after the final whistle.

Paris St-Germain became the first French side to complete a domestic treble thanks to Edinson Cavani’s headed winner against a dogged Auxerre in the French Cup final. The Uruguay striker settled the outcome midway through the second half when his effort struck the bar, then the back of goalkeeper Donovan Leon. “We won the rest of the trophies,” said PSG’s top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic. “No other team has done this and I’m very proud of the team.” PSG coach Laurent Blanc added: “We finished the season very well. We wanted this cup and it was hard to win it. “Auxerre played very well and you have to take your hat off to them. They played to their strengths.” The Ligue 1 and French league cup champions also went close through Thiago Motta, who hit a post with a 25-yard drive, while Cavani had a header saved and a shot blocked near the goal line.

Arsenal became the most successful club in FA Cup history as they outclassed Aston Villa 4 – 0 at Wembley to earn Arsene Wenger a record-equalling sixth triumph. The Gunners retained the trophy they won against Hull City a year ago to put Wenger’s total of wins alongside George Ramsay – who previously stood alone with the record for his victories with Villa between 1887 and 1920. Arsenal’s 12th final victory was never in doubt as they dominated with a magnificent display, the only surprise being that it took until five minutes before half-time for their control to be rewarded with Theo Walcott’s goal. Alexis Sanchez confirmed that superiority with one of the great FA Cup final goals shortly after the restart – a swerving, dipping 25-yard thunderbolt that flew high past startled Villa keeper Shay Given. Villa were a shadow of the side that performed so impressively to beat Liverpool at Wembley in the semi-final, their flaws exposed ruthlessly as Per Mertesacker took advantage of an embarrassing lack of marking to head the third. Substitute Olivier Giroud’s fourth in the final moments only completed what was a harrowing day for Tim Sherwood’s side, who had travelled to Wembley high on optimism and expectation after an impressive run to the final.

Amir Khan wants to fight Floyd Mayweather next after claiming a unanimous points victory over American Chris Algieri in their welterweight bout in New York on Friday. Khan, 28, scored 117-111, 117-111 and 115-113 on the three judges’ scorecards to claim a fifth consecutive win. The Briton now wants to try to end triple-welterweight world champion Mayweather’s 48-fight unbeaten run. “Amir Khan wants to fight Floyd Mayweather,” he said. “I want that next. I’m number one World Boxing Council [challenger]. He’s the champion. So let’s make it happen.” Mayweather beat Manny Pacquiao earlier this month in Las Vegas to add the WBO welterweight title to the WBC and WBA titles he already owned, in the most lucrative fight in boxing history. Mayweather, 38, who is set to retire after a final fight in September, turned down a meeting with Khan last year ahead of the Pacquiao bout, with the five-weight world champion preferring to fight Argentina’s Marcos Maidana instead. Former two-time light-welterweight world champion Khan showed good stamina to overcome former light-welterweight world champion Algieri at the Barclays Centre, Brooklyn, scoring heavily with his quick combinations after a bright start from the New Yorker. Algieri landed a strong combination of his own early in the eighth round, prompting a surge of cheers for the New Yorker from the partisan crowd, but Khan says it inspired him to dig deeper and see out the fight. “He came to fight, wanted to win, had his home crowd, but I came here to win,” he said. “The crowd really fired me up the last three rounds when Chris really came at me hard.”

Former England captain Rio Ferdinand has retired from football, days after being released by Queens Park Rangers. The 36-year-old said it was “the right time” to retire from “the game I love”, in a statement read out on BT Sport.  London-born Ferdinand, who had 12 years at Manchester United after spells with West Ham and Leeds, last played for QPR in March. In the statement, he paid tribute to his wife Rebecca Ellison, who died from breast cancer on 1 May. Announcing his retirement, Ferdinand said: “After 18 years as a professional footballer, I now feel it’s the right time for me to retire from the game that I love. “As a 12-year-old boy, kicking around a football on the Friary Estate in Peckham, I never dreamt that I would play for my boyhood club West Ham, captain Leeds United, win the Champions League with Manchester United, or re-join my first manager Harry Redknapp at Queens Park Rangers. “I will always regard the 81 times that I played for England with immense pride. These are all treasured memories that will last a lifetime.” Ferdinand began his career under Redknapp at West Ham, and had a short loan spell at Bournemouth before making his England debut at the age of 19 in 1997. He joined Leeds for £18m in 2000, and then moved to Manchester United two years later in a deal worth £29.1m, which at the time was a world-record fee for a defender. While at Old Trafford, he won six Premier League titles, and lifted the Champions League in 2008 as Chelsea were beaten on penalties in Moscow. He captained England for the first time in 2008, and replaced John Terry in the role on a full-time basis in February 2010, but missed out on the chance to lead his country at that year’s World Cup in South Africa after suffering knee ligament damage during a pre-tournament training session.

Namibia and Mozambique are both aiming to lift the Cosafa Cup for the first time ever when they meet in Saturday’s final in South Africa. Both countries are past runners-up in the southern African Championship, Namibia in 1997 and 1999 and Mozambique in 2008. In Thursday’s semi-finals Namibia snatched a 3-2 win over Madagascar, despite poor defending and finishing. While the Mozambicans scored late to beat Botswana 2-1 in the last four. Namibia’s victory came thanks to a Peter Shalulile goal six minutes from the end of the first game with a rocket like effort off his left foot. The goal came not long after the youthful striker had missed an easy chance in front of goal – one of several glaring misses by the Brave Warriors, who dominated the game. The two teams, playing their fifth match in just over week, provided four goals in the first half but looked understandably tired after the interval. Namibia scored first through Benson Shilongo in the 17th minute, although he almost made a hash of a close-range tap-in. Dean Hotto set up Shilongo for a 32nd minute equaliser and a 2-2 half-time score. Mozambique broke the deadlock against Botswana through nippy striker Isac, who despite his lack of height climbed above the defence to glance home a header from a corner in the 65th minute. But Botswana’s Omaatla Kebatho equalised in the 78th minute to look to send the game to extra time. But as the match went into the last minute, substitute Parkim headed home as Botswana were caught ball watching. Botswana will meet Madagascar in the third place play-off before Saturday’s final. Both matches will be played at the Moruleng Stadium. On Friday, at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace, neighbours Malawi meet Zambia in the final of the plate competition for the sides knocked out in the last eight.

Ghana opened their Fifa Under-20 World Cup campaign in New Zealand with a 1-1 draw against Austria. Ghana’s Yaw Yeboah converted an 90th minute penalty, that he had won when he was brought down by Konrad Laimer, to salvage the draw. Earlier, Austria had taken the lead after Bernd Gschweidl scored an early second half goal in their Group B clash. It was an entertaining match despite the wet conditions in Wellington. Austria seemed to be in control of the fixture after their 50th minute goal, and even missed the chance to double their lead ten minutes later when Markus Blutsch shot over from a good position. But Ghana, champions in 2009, rescued a point after Laimer’s clumsy tackle on Yeboah which resulted in a penalty. Yeboah produced a solid spot-kick, hitting a left-foot shot low to the right of Casali, the Austria goalkeeper. In the other Group B match, Argentina captain Angel Correa scored both his team’s goals as the tournament favourites were held to a 2-2 draw by Panama. Three other African teams – Mali, Senegal and Nigeria – will also feature at the tournament.

Promoted AFC Bournemouth have signed Chelsea winger Christian Atsu on a season-long loan deal. The 23-year-old joined Chelsea from Portuguese side Porto in 2013 for a reported £3.5m, but has yet to feature for the Premier League champions. Ghana international Atsu spent last season on loan at Everton, making 13 appearances in all competitions. “It is a huge coup to us as a club that he was so keen to come here,” Cherries chief executive Neill Blake said.  “Eddie Howe has got the team playing an exciting brand of football which has earned us plaudits nationwide. “I am confident that Christian will flourish under his watchful eye and amongst this talented group.”

Tottenham have confirmed the signing of Austrian defender Kevin Wimmer from Cologne. The 22-year-old, who has one cap for his country, has penned a five-year deal.

Mr. Joseph Sepp Blatter has been re-elected president of FIFA, football’s world governing body, in a vote overshadowed by arrests and corruption allegations. Mr Blatter’s rival, Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan, withdrew after the first round of voting. Mr Blatter fell seven short of the two-thirds needed, but Prince Ali opted not to contest further. Seven top officials were arrested in Switzerland on Wednesday as part of a US prosecution that indicted 14 people. Mr Blatter hailed his victory, thanking all those who voted from him and his rival, Prince Ali. Mr Blatter said: “I am not perfect, nobody is perfect, but we will do a good job together I am sure.” He also hinted that this term in office, his fifth, could be his last, saying: “At the end of my term I will give up FIFA in a strong position.” In conceding, Prince Ali said: “It’s been a wonderful journey… And I want to thank in particular those of you who were brave enough to support me.” The vote took place at FIFA’s congress in Zurich and a candidate needed 140 votes to win in the first round. Mr Blatter won 133 to Prince Ali’s 73. The two candidates had earlier delivered final appeals to the electors. Prince Ali, 39, said that questions had been raised in recent days “about whether our FIFA family is morally bankrupt”. He said: “There are no easy answers and no blame that can be cast that will wash away the stain that marks us all.” Mr Blatter had said: “I am being held accountable for the current storm – so be it, I will shoulder the responsibility. I will take it upon myself and I want to fix FIFA together with you.” To applause from a large number of delegates, he said: “I would like to stay with you. I would like to continue with you.”

The colourful inauguration ceremony was held at the Eagles Square in Abuja and was attended by the immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan; Ex Vice President Namadi Sambo; Former Nigerian Leaders – Yakubu Gowon, Shehu Shagari, Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsalam Abubakar, Ernest Shonekan and Olusegun Obasanjo were in attendance. Some of the African leaders in attendance were President Jacob Zuma of South Africa; President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe; President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia; President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana; President Teodoro Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea; King Mswati III of Swaziland; President Paul Kagame of Rwanda; President Alpha Condé of Guinea; President Idriss Deby of Chad; President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger; President Boni Yayi of Benin; President Faure Gnassingbé of Togo; President Macky Sall of Senegal; Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn of Ethiopia; Deputy President William Samoei Ruto of Kenya and The chairperson of the African Union commission Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma. FIFA president Sepp Blatter has made his opening speech at the 65th FIFA Congress in Zurich, Switzerland. He started by welcoming the Swiss minister of sport and defence, as well as others.”You will agree with me that these are unprecedented and difficult times for FIFA. The events of yesterday have cast a long shadow over football and over this congress. “Actions of individuals have proven to bring shame and humiliation on football and demand action and change from us all. We cannot allow the reputation of football and FIFA to be dragged through the mud any longer. It has to stop here. “I know many people hold me responsible. I cannot monitor everyone all the time. If people want to do wrong, they will also try to hide it.” “The next few months will not be easy. I am sure more bad news will follow. “Those who are corrupt in football are in a minority, like in society and must be held responsible for their actions. Football cannot be the exception to the rule. There can be no place for corruption of any kind. “We must respond tomorrow, we have the opportunity to begin the long and difficult road to rebuilding trust. We have lost the trust and we must now earn it back. Solidarity and unity is asked for the game, for the world, for peace. Thank you.”
