Sergi Guardiola in action for his former club Alcorcon

It is the stuff of dreams for any player to join Barcelona. Yet within hours of signing for the club’s reserve team, forward Sergi Guardiola was sacked after officials were alerted to “offensive tweets” he had posted two years ago about Barca and Catalonia. Guardiola, 24, joined Barcelona B on Monday but, according to Marca  , the Spanish national daily sport newspaper, his contract was terminated “some hours later” when they became aware of pro-Real Madrid tweets,  including offensive language about Catalans. Guardiola started this season at Madrid-based club Alcorcon in Spain’s second tier. Talk of rivalry.

Mikel loving life under Hiddink
Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel is loving life under new manager Guus Hiddink and is confident the Dutchman can get the reigning Premier League champions back on track. Hiddink was brought in to replace Jose Mourinho after the Portuguese was fired following Chelsea’s dismal start to the season. Former Netherlands boss Hiddink was in the stands to watch Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over Sunderland last weekend and Mikel is pleased to be reunited with the 69-year-old after his previous tenure in 2009. “He is still the same man. He likes to get involved in training, have a bit of banter with the players but at the same time it is all serious business and that is what we need,” Mikel told the official Chelsea website. “He is always like a father figure to the team, speaking to the players individually, putting an arm around them and getting feedback from the team on what we think problems are and then trying to fix them.

FIFAgate: Sexwale questioned over World Cup bribes….

Tokyo Sexwale

FIFA presidential candidate Tokyo Sexwale has appeared before a US grand jury in New York as part of an on-going investigation into World Cup bribes. He was questioned in relation to an alleged $10m corrupt payment from South Africa to ex-FIFA vice president Jack Warner. Sexwale appeared as a potential witness at the FBI’s request on December 17. He was a member of the bid board that successfully campaigned for his home country to host the 2010 World Cup. A US criminal indictment claims the money was paid to Warner via a FIFA account, disguised as football development cash, in order to secure votes for South Africa’s bid. A grand jury is empowered under US law to investigate potential criminal conduct and determines whether criminal charges should be brought. Sexwale is one of five candidates in the running for the Fifa presidency, with the election taking place on 26 February.
