Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi is yet to make an appearance under Antonio Conte. And the Nigeria international will reportedly be offered the chance to test himself in France or China if he does so. Mikel arrived at Stamford Bridge ten years ago with a reputation as one of world football’s most exciting teen talents. And despite the fact he has failed to live up to that billing, he has been able to forge a career as a reliable defensive midfielder. Mikel has played a role in securing two Premier League titles, one Champions League, one Europa League and seven more trophies during his time at Chelsea.
However, he has found himself cast to the wayside by new boss Antonio Conte this season. Mikel is yet to feature under the former Juventus gaffer in any competition. And, with his contract set to expire at the end of next June, he is expected to leave Chelsea when the transfer window reopens in the new year. According to Le 10 Sport, Marseille manager Rudi Garcia could add him to his squad. The Ligue 1 giants are not said to be the only side potentially interested in securing his services though. While Le 10 Sport do not specify any clubs in particular, they indicate a number of Chinese Super League outfits would be prepared to match the whopping £3m annual salary he earns at Chelsea – something Marseille would be unable to do.
Mikel has picked up 78 Nigeria caps since making his debut in 2006.
