There are versatile footballers… and then there is Adji Ndiaye.

The young Senegalese star has achieved something incredibly rare by representing her country in two completely different positions—as a striker and as a goalkeeper.

In September 2023, Ndiaye featured as a goalkeeper for Senegal’s senior national team in a WAFCON qualifier against Mozambique. Just 12 days later, she was deployed as a striker for Senegal’s U-20 team in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers and even found the back of the net against Guinea. That remarkable achievement earned her recognition from the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) as one of football’s most unique stories.

Fast forward to the ongoing WAFCON in Morocco, and Ndiaye has once again stolen the headlines.

The Senegal goalkeeper produced one of the performances of the tournament by saving two penalty attempts from Morocco after the first kick was ordered to be retaken. Her composure, sharp reflexes and mental strength kept Senegal in the contest and deservedly earned her the Player of the Match award.

Whether she’s leading the attack or guarding the goal, Adji Ndiaye has shown that she is willing to do whatever her country needs. That level of versatility, commitment and selflessness is almost unheard of in modern football.

Senegal may have been eliminated from WAFCON but Adji Ndiaye sure left her mark. Players like her remind us that football isn’t just about mastering one position—it’s about answering the call whenever your team needs you.
