Rivers Ripples: Press Conference by Dr. Dakuku Peterside….

Peterside

You will recall that on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 the Nigerian Supreme Court handed down judgment on the Rivers State Governorship matter. In that judgment, the apex court upheld the appeal by Gov. Nyesom Wike against the earlier decisions by the Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal and the Appeal Court which concurrently annulled Nyesom Wike’s election as governor.

NYESOM WIKE’S UNBECOMING THREAT TO INEC, OTHERS
Consequent upon the judgment by the Supreme Court, I, the APC Governorship Candidate, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, despite receiving the judgment with mixed feelings, came out to publicly announce my unreserved acceptance of the verdict. However, a few days later, the Governor, while addressing Civil Servants in Port Harcourt exhibited unconscionable indiscretion of the highest order by re-echoing his earlier incendiary statements threatening INEC personnel with death over the forthcoming National and State Assemblies rerun elections. He said, “Anyone who plans to rig an election is an armed robber and should be treated as such. If you are coming to rig an election in the state, first prepare your will before embarking on the journey. Inform your wife or husband and go ahead to say your last prayer.”

English Premier League launches new logo….

The Premier League has launched a new logo which will be used from next season onwards

The English Premier League has launched a new logo which will be used from next season. The fresh new design includes a modern take on the lion icon – a symbol that is part of the competition’s heritage dating back to its launch in 1992. The crowned lion has been a prominent feature of the Premier League logo since its inception, representing the relationship between the league and the English Football Association – whose logo features three lions. Premier League clubs agreed a new central sponsorship strategy last July which included a move away from a title sponsorship model. Instead of long-time backers Barclays, the Premier League will have a roster of secondary rights partners from next season onwards. From next season the Premier League will have seven main sponsors instead of one title sponsor. Two – Nike and EA Sports – have already been announced with five more to be named in the coming months.

Last week the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the virus a global public health emergency. Kipchoge Keino said: “We are not going to risk taking Kenyans there if this Zika virus reaches epidemic levels.” Brazilian authorities insist there will be no risk to athletes and spectators, except pregnant women, when the Rio Games take place in August. The International Olympic Committee says it is in “close contact” with organisers, while Olympic venues will be inspected daily in the lead-up to and during the Games.

It is a privilege to leave my mark on it.”

The Argentina international sat out December’s FIFA Club World Cup semi-final after being diagnosed with renal colic, a type of abdominal pain commonly attributed to kidney stones. Messi has scored 12 goals in 17 La Liga games this season to help Barcelona go three points clear at the top of the table.

I will have surgery this week and will come back stronger,” Zouma tweeted. Chelsea said he would be out for “approximately six months”. Napoli fans to wear Koulibaly masks….

Fans wear Kalidou Koulibaly masks

A group of Napoli supporters will wear masks of defender Kalidou Koulibaly against Carpi on Sunday, after the player was racially abused by Lazio fans in their previous game. Wednesday’s league match was stopped for three minutes in the second half after some Lazio fans aimed racist chants at Napoli defender Koulibaly. The game continued and Napoli – who are top of Serie A – won 2-0. Supporters’ group Quelli del Sangue Azzurro are behind the mask appeal. A statement read: “Everyone in Naples is offended by what happened to our young star. Because of this, we want to show our full support to Koulibaly. “We are all with you, Kalidou. Our invitation to Napoli fans is to print a photo of the defender and put it on your face when the teams come on the pitch.” Lazio were fined 50,000 euros and will have to close three sections of the Stadio Olimpico for their next two Serie A home games.

Jamie Vardy has signed a new three-year deal with Leicester City. The England striker, 29, joined Leicester from Fleetwood for £1m in 2012, and his goals have helped Claudio Ranieri’s side reach the top of the Premier League table this season. “I’m absolutely delighted to be fighting to achieve something special with this club. I’ve never known a spirit like it,” he said. “I want to be part of it for a long time.” He added: “Leicester have shown nothing but total faith in me since the day I arrived and it’s impossible to measure how much that belief has helped me to improve. “I’ll forever be grateful for the investment the club has made in me and I’ll spend every day working to repay it.” In November, Vardy became the first player to score in 11 successive Premier League matches. He broke the record, previously held by Ruud van Nistelrooy, when he put Leicester ahead in their 1-1 draw with Van Nistelrooy’s former club Manchester United.

Jurgen Klopp undergoes appendix surgery

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has undergone surgery to remove his appendix, according to reports. The German boss was forced to miss Liverpool’s match with Sunderland at Anfield this afternoon due to the problem, with his side squandering a two-goal lead against the Black Cats. Goals from Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana had given the hosts a comfortable advantage going into the final 10 minutes, but a late Sunderland comeback saw Sam Allardyce’s side rescue a point. Hazard said sorry to Mourinho….

Eden Hazard, pictured at training on Friday, sent Jose Mourinho a text to apologise after he was sacked

Eden Hazard has revealed he was left feeling so guilty over Jose Mourinho’s sacking that he sent a text message to the former Chelsea manager to apologise. Mourinho was axed by the Premier League champions in December after a disastrous first half of the season leaving the Blues just one point above the relegation zone after 16 games. Hazard, who was Chelsea’s standout performer in their title winning campaign last season, was one of a number of players performing well below their usual high standards. And the Belgium international has admitted that a portion of blame for Chelsea’s most successful manager ever losing his job lays at his door. ‘I sent him (Mourinho) the message to say I was sorry he had gone and, well, just that I was sorry,’ Hazard said. ‘We’d enjoyed all that success together last season, but this time round we hadn’t.

Sexwale loses home support ahead of FIFA election….

South Africa's Tokyo Sexwale

South African Tokyo Sexwale’s bid to become the next FIFA president has failed to win the support of the Confederation of Africa Football. CAF announced after a meeting in Rwanda on Friday that it would back Asian Football Confederation president Sheikh Salman in the 26 February elections. Sheikh Salman is now expected to gain the votes of Africa’s 54 federations. It appears to bring an end to Sexwale’s hopes of becoming the first African to hold the office of FIFA president. Sexwale had been aiming to get the support of his own continent but has recently been under pressure to withdraw.

Manchester United hold talks with Mourinho….

Man Utd fan

Manchester United have held talks with representatives of ex-Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, BBC reports. The 53-year-old Portuguese, who was sacked by the Blues in December, is increasingly hopeful of succeeding Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford. No agreement has been reached, and the club have made no comment, but negotiations have begun. Dutchman Van Gaal, 64, is expected to leave United at the end of the season – one year earlier than scheduled. That would leave the way clear for Mourinho, who is known to be excited by the prospect of taking over at Old Trafford. The United hierarchy are thought to be keen to respond after Manchester City secured the services of coveted former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola earlier this week. Mourinho’s arrival would mean a resumption of a rivalry that began in Spain when he was coach of Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013.

CAF backs Sheikh Salman for FIFA presidency….

CAF backs Sheikh Salman for FIFA presidency

The Confederation of African Football has announced its backing of Asian Football Confederation president Sheikh Salman of Bahrain for the FIFA Presidency. The announcement was made in Kigali, Rwanda where the CHAN 2016 tournament is being held. Africa is seen as key in the election set for the 26th of this month, as the confederation with the highest number of votes with 54 in total. However with the voting being through a secret ballot, the CAF endorsement may not necessarily see all FA’s going with CAF’s decision. UEFA secretary general Gianni Infantino, , former FIFA executive Jerome Champagne of France, and South African businessman Tokyo Sexwale will contest Salman for the top post to replace Sepp Blatter. Reports have suggested that Sexwale may pull out of the race if he does not have good support from Africa and the latest development could be a setback in his ambitions.
