Cavani and Silva set to leave Paris St-Germain….

Edinson Cavani and Thiago Silva are set to leave Paris St-Germain this summer after the conclusion of the club’s Champions League campaign in August. Uruguay striker Cavani, 33, is PSG’s record scorer with 200 goals and Brazil defender Silva, 35, is club captain. “It was a difficult decision to make – they are players who made their mark on the club’s history,” sporting director Leonardo told Le Journal du Dimanche.

Messi scores as Barcelona return to action….

Barcelona scored 66 seconds into their return to action as Lionel Messi completed a comfortable 4-0 win at Mallorca in La Liga. Arturo Vidal headed the opener and former Middlesbrough striker Martin Braithwaite added his first for the club before the break. Luis Suarez came off the bench to make his first appearance since early January and Jordi Alba made it 3-0.

EPL players to wear ‘Black Lives Matter’ on back of shirts….

English Premier League players’ names will be replaced on the back of their shirts with ‘Black Lives Matter’ for the first 12 matches of the restarted season. The Premier League will also support any player who chooses to ‘take a knee’ before or during matches. Players in Germany have made gestures of solidarity with people protesting about the death of George Floyd.

Juventus reached the Coppa Italia final despite Ronaldo penalty miss….

Thirteen-time winners Juventus reached the Coppa Italia final on the away goals rule at AC Milan’s expense as Italy’s football season restarted. After drawing 1-1 in Milan on 13 February, Juve could not find the net in a semi-final second leg played behind closed doors in Turin. Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty awarded for handball before Milan’s Ante Rebic was sent off.

Rayo Vallecano beat Albacete six months after game started….

A game in Spain which started last December before being stopped because of offensive chanting was finally completed on Wednesday as the country’s football season restarted. The concluding 45 minutes of the second-tier match between Madrid side Rayo Vallecano and Albacete were played out in the capital – 179 days after the game started – without spectators.

Roger Federer to miss rest of 2020 season….

Roger Federer will miss the rest of the 2020 season after having a further operation on his right knee. The 20-time Grand Slam winner had the initial arthroscopic surgery in February but said he suffered a “setback” with his rehabilitation. Professional tennis has been suspended since March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Odion Ighalo is set to stay at Old Trafford until January 31, 2021

Odion Ighalo has vowed to do whatever he can to take Manchester United “higher and higher” after his loan from Shanghai Shenhua was extended. The Nigerian striker is set to stay at Old Trafford until January 31, 2021 after United struck a new deal with his parent club in China. Ighalo initially joined United in a Deadline Day move in January and scored four times in eight appearances in all competitions prior to the suspension of the Premier League.

Brazil withdraws 2023 Women’s World Cup hosting bid….

Brazil has withdrawn its bid to host the 2023 Women’s World Cup. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said the government did not consider it wise to offer financial guarantees in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Brazil will now support Colombia’s proposal, which is up against Japan and a joint bid from Australia and New Zealand to host the 32-team tournament.

Lamine Diack’s trial set to start in Paris….

The trial of Lamine Diack, the disgraced former head of athletics’ world governing body the IAAF, will get under way in Paris on Monday. The 86-year-old Senegalese faces corruption and money-laundering charges linked to the Russian doping scandal. Diack was investigated by French authorities for four years over claims he took payments of more than 3m euros to cover up cheating.

Anthony Joshua says racism is a pandemic….

World heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua described racism as a “pandemic” when he addressed protesters at a Black Lives Matter march. The 30-year-old, wearing a knee brace as a “precautionary measure”, read a poem and spoke in front of hundreds of people in his home town of Watford.
